Also known as wide flange beams or I-beams, they are designated by their nominal depth and weight per unit length — for example, a W200x46 has a depth of approximately 203 mm and weighs 46.1 kg/m (31.0 lb/ft). Common sizes range from the light W150x13 (13 kg/m) to the heavy W610x174 (174 kg/m). W shapes are used for beams, columns, and transfer girders in steel-framed buildings per AISC 360, Eurocode 3, and NBR 8800.
C-section profiles (also called lipped channels) are cold-formed from thin steel sheet. They feature flanges with stiffening lips that improve local buckling resistance. Typical designations include C 200x75x20x2.66 meaning 200 mm height, 75 mm flange width, 20 mm lip, and 2.66 mm thickness (10.75 kg/m).
