Two-story house, 7 x 9 m

A 7 x 9 m two-story house, with living room, kitchen and half bath downstairs and two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, goes from the brief to the sheets, with the upper walls over the lower ones. The intermediate floor comes from the Floor tool, the story navigator picks where each wall is drawn, and the analysis shows the floor load path down to the ground.

Overview

The second story

The page 60 m² house takes a single-story house from the brief to the sheets. This one walks the same path with a two-story house: a 7.00 x 9.00 m rectangle with two 2.80 m stories, living room, kitchen and half bath on the ground floor, two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.

Everything that changes is in the middle of the project. The wizard starts with two stories and Entrepiso (intermediate floor) set to "Com" (with); the Floor tool places the joists on top of the ground floor walls; the mini section in the footer thumbnail becomes the navigator that says on which story the next wall is drawn; and the upper walls repeat the lines of the lower ones, so that each upper stud lands on a lower stud.

The rest follows the single-story house: short steps, each with the link to the page that teaches it, the analysis read on the card, and the outputs.

The brief

Two stories on the same lines

Both plans use the same three interior walls. One crosses the house from side to side 3.50 m from the front; another runs from the back to it, 3.30 m from the left wall; the third closes the back right corner. Downstairs are the living room at the front, the kitchen on the left, the half bath in the corner and the dining room in the middle. Upstairs, the same spaces become bedroom 1, bedroom 2, the bathroom and the hall.

What this example adds

Three things the single-story house did not have: the intermediate floor, placed by the Floor tool on the ground floor walls; the story navigator, which picks the story before each wall; and the load path, read in the member report, from the floor joist to the stud that receives it and from that stud to the ground.

Section and openings

Section A-A of the two-story house: kitchen and dining room on the ground floor, bedroom 2 and hall upstairs, the 300 mm lattice-joist intermediate floor between them and the two-plane roof over the 7.00 m

Section A-A, 3.50 m from the back, looking from the front: kitchen and dining room downstairs, bedroom 2 and hall upstairs.

Each story is 2.80 m floor to floor. The upper floor walls start at +2.80, on top of the lower ones, and the 300 mm lattice joists of the intermediate floor rest on the top track of the ground floor, with the bottom chord at +2.80 and the top chord at +3.10. The roof starts at +5.60: two 30% planes over the 7.00 m, ridge 1.06 m above the wall top and 0.60 m eave.

The names are the tool's. The Opening window (Doors and windows) numbers doors and windows per wall and writes the size in the label, which is why each wall has its own J1. The distances along the wall are to the center of the opening, measured from the left wall (front and back) or from the back (sides).

The interior doors and the stairs are not part of this example: the brief fixed only the entrance door and the windows.

The decisions

What the two-story house decides before the first click

The table gathers the decisions, each with the page that teaches it. The rows in bold are the new ones, those of the second story: the envelope with two levels, the intermediate floor and the upper walls over the lower ones.

Why the upper walls repeat the lower ones. In a two-story house, the bedroom load goes down the upper wall, crosses the intermediate floor and continues down the lower wall to the ground (Load path). On the same line and the same module, the upper stud lands on the lower one, and the track between them does not work as a beam.

The assembly

The envelope and the ground floor

One step per tool, in the order the two-story house was built. Each step has the link to the page that teaches it.

1. Two stories in the wizard

Brazil market, roll-formed project on the FRAMECAD F325iT (New project wizard). On the Building envelope tab, the + next to Pavimentos (stories) takes the count to 2, and Cobertura (roof) and Entrepiso stay at "Com". The drawing stacks two 2.80 m blocks and the total height becomes 5.60 m. The levels are called Térreo and 1º Pav, the names the story navigator will show (Plan and 3D). On the Structure · sections tab, before the first wall, the Stud, the Track and the Gable each change, in their own list, to C 89x41/39x12x1.15, 1.66 kg/m: the wall is born with the section of its role, and changing it later does not alter a wall that already exists.

Building envelope tab with 2 stories, Cobertura and Entrepiso set to Com and the total height of 5.60 m
The envelope of the two-story house: 2 stories, Cobertura and Entrepiso set to "Com", two 2.80 m dimensions and the total height of 5.60 m. Clicking a dimension edits the ceiling height of that story.

2. The ground floor perimeter

With no story picked, the Exterior wall draws on the Térreo (Exterior walls). The first click goes on the X axis, 7.00 m from where the axes cross, and the first side, 7.00 m long, ends exactly at that crossing (Plan and 3D). The other three are typed, 9.00, 7.00 and 9.00 m, and the last one closes at the starting point. This puts the back left corner at the origin, and the 600 mm module of the walls, the floors and the roof starts from the same zero: that is what will put each upper stud over a floor joist. The corners become L joints.

3. The three interior walls, with Box at the T joints

With Snap (Snap and interior walls): the wall that crosses the house from side to side 5.50 m from the back; the one from the back to it, 3.30 m from the left wall; and the half bath wall, from the right wall, 1.70 m from the back, to the middle one. That makes six T joints, and at all of them the Stud changes from Back to back ][ to Box [] right away (Wall joints), the lesson of the 60 m² house: the T takes the arm of the other wall and, here, the floor joist too.

4. The ground floor openings

The entrance door and the living room window at the front, the kitchen window on the left wall and the half bath awning window on the right one, with the sizes in The brief (Doors and windows). The 1.20 m windows are centered on a stud and the 0.60 m one in the middle of a bay, with both edges on the 600 mm module. Each opening gets the 300 mm lattice header and the jambs (Headers).

Ground floor straps and the intermediate floor

5. X strap on the ground floor walls

Select each wall that takes a strap, click Open view on its card and, in the view, use X strap, placed by Span, on both faces and with a double stud at the end, always in a panel without openings and with the ends on the module (Straps and blocking). The ground floor gets nine X straps. The upper floor will repeat four of them above: at the front, the right 2.80 m, next to the living room window (the inspector shows 2.80 m and 45°); at the back, the right 2.80 m; on the left, the panel from 0.60 to 3.00 m from the back; on the right, the one from 2.40 to 4.80 m from the back, between the two T joints. The other five stay only below, because the ground floor receives the wind of both stories: the left 2.40 m at the back, the 2.40 m at the front end of both sides and two on the interior wall of the living room, from 0.60 to 3.00 m and from 4.20 to 6.60 m from the left. The front, with the door and the window, only fits one X, and the interior wall, parallel to it, shares with it the wind load along the 7.00 m. With two stories, the box comes with Height set to Up to the beam: the strap stops at the bottom chord of the floor lattice joist.

6. The intermediate floor with the Floor tool

Still on the Térreo, the Floor tool and one click in each room (Floors). The box opens with the shorter span direction, the governing wall and why, and the joist a roll-formed project brings: Lattice checked, 300 mm deep, no rim joist ("the joists rest on the top track"). In the truss model field, Pratt: the diagonals slope down toward the center, and the first and last ones start from the top chord right over the support, taking the floor load straight to the top track. Enter places it. With a lattice joist, placing shows the card "Lançando o piso..." (placing the floor) for a few seconds: the next room comes after it closes, and the box confirms, for example, "Piso PS1: 11 vigas." (floor PS1: 11 joists).

PS1, in the living room: 3.50 m span, joists along Z, 11 joists. The governing wall is the interior wall of the living room (Parede 6 in the box), which "tem pilar ou treliça" (has a column or truss): the double studs of its two straps count as columns. At the front, two ends "apoiam em verga ou treliça" (bear on a header or truss), over the headers of the door and the window.

PS4 inherits the grid PS2 set on the middle interior wall: the kitchen joists and the dining room joists land facing each other, on both sides of the same wall. The four floors add up to 33 joists, and each lattice joist enters the model as chords, verticals and diagonals: this is the step that adds the most members to the project.

The upper floor, on the ground floor lines

7. The 1º Pav in the story navigator

On the Section and span tab of the footer thumbnail, the 1º Pav box lights up: the upper block turns yellow and the label shows 1º Pav with its 2.80 m (Plan and 3D). From here on, every new wall is drawn on the 1º Pav, with its base at 2.80 m and its top at 5.60 m, and the plan shows the intermediate floor joists underneath. The arrows go up and down a story, and All shows both again.

Story navigator with the 1º Pav active and the upper block in yellow

8. The upper perimeter, corner to corner

With the 1º Pav active, the Exterior wall clicks the four corners of the lower perimeter and closes on the first one (Exterior walls). Snap lights up on the corner of the ground floor wall, and the new wall lands exactly on top of it: 9.00, 7.00, 9.00 and 7.00 m, as below. Clicking the corners, rather than typing the sides, is the shortest way to repeat a line that already exists.

9. The three interior walls, on the same lines

The upper interior walls come out with Snap on the ends of the lower ones (Snap and interior walls): the one that crosses the house 5.50 m from the back, the middle one and the bathroom one. The project now has 14 walls, seven per story, each upper wall as long as the one below.

10. The upper windows

Still on the 1º Pav, the three windows in The brief: bedroom 1 at the front, bedroom 2 at the back and the bathroom awning window on the right wall, just above the half bath one (Doors and windows). The tool puts each one on the wall of the active story and repeats the 300 mm lattice header (Headers). The edges follow the ground floor rule, on the module, and no upper window sits in a panel that will take the strap.

The strap goes up, and bracing covers all 14 walls

11. X strap on the four upper walls

With the 1º Pav active, the same tool and the same box: X strap, Span, on both faces, double stud at the end and Height set to Up to the beam (Straps and blocking). The view of each wall shows the upper story with the lower one beneath it, and the new strap only takes the upper wall. Each upper X goes in the same panel as a ground floor X, so that the double stud at the upper end lands on the lower one:

12. Bracing the 14 walls

With All in the story navigator, the Strap and blocking tool, set to the Blocking type, offers Brace all walls in the project (14) (Bracing). Following the market rule, the box says "with 2.80 m: 2 lines at 0.93, 1.87 m from the base" and puts the strap on both faces. One click and the message confirms "14 paredes travadas" (14 walls braced): both stories at once, each wall with the lines measured from its own base.

Next to it, the box set to the Blocking type: lines at most 1.25 m apart and blocking every 3.60 m, both from the market; RET 50x0.95 strap and C 89x41/39x12x0.95 blocking.

Strap and blocking box set to the Blocking type, with the Brace all walls in the project (14) button

The roof over the upper floor

13. The roof by outline, on the upper story

The Roof is built on the active story (Roof). With the 1º Pav lit in the navigator, the tool, in By outline mode, recognizes the seven upper walls as a closed loop and writes "Pavimento 2, nível fim +5,60 m" (story 2, top level +5.60 m). In the list of sides, uncheck 14 and 8, the 7 m front and back: an unchecked side rises as a gable. On sides 4 and 6, the 9 m side walls, a 30% slope (the box shows 16.7°), 600 mm eave, ceramic tile (batten with a 380 mm gauge, 30% minimum) and In-line structure (Roof trusses). Before generating, the summary checks the shape: 2 planes, 1 ridge 1.06 m above the wall top, no hips and no valleys.

"Gerar o telhado" (generate the roof) takes the project to 3,092 members. The roof classes: 658 in the Tesoura comum (common truss) class, 40 in Tesoura de oitão (gable truss), 30 in Travamento do banzo (bottom chord bracing) and 22 in Ripa (batten).

Roof box by outline on the 1º Pav before generating, with sides 14 and 8 unchecked and the green summary
The box before generating, with the 1º Pav active. In the sketch and in the list, sides 4 and 6 (the side walls) become planes, and 14 and 8, unchecked, rise as gables. On the plan, the 30% arrows point to the side walls. The green summary checks the shape: 2 planes and the ridge 1.06 m above the wall top.

Why the gables are at the front and back. This way the ridge runs along the 9 m, and each truss only spans the 7.00 m from side to side, the shorter span of the house. It bears on the upper side walls, and each of the 16 trusses, every 600 mm, lands on one of their studs, as the In-line structure requires. That is what section A-A shows, in The brief.

The analysis

Loads, analysis and the result on screen

14. The loads, now with the intermediate floor

Nothing is entered by hand (Loads). With Entrepiso set to "Com", the wizard also stored the floor loads, and Load cases shows five cases: PP Parede, with the green PP badge (the steel weight comes from the members themselves), PP Telhado and SC Telhado, as in the single-story house, and the two new ones, PP Entrepiso, dead, and SC Entrepiso, live. The eight wind cases are created at calculation time, and the standard combines everything into 26 combinations.

15. Calculate and read the badge and the member card

Calculate, at the top, and the button turns into Calculated (Reading the results). The first run comes back with the red badge at 7: of the 3,562 checks, seven fail, all in combined compression and bending. At the top of the card list are the two corner studs of the left wall of the 1º Pav (M14, with 1.167, and M1076, with 1.117), the four jambs of the 1.20 m ground floor windows (from 1.028 to 1.071) and a 0.20 m piece of track at the front right corner (M377, 1.011); just below, at the limit, M1056 and M1002, with 0.999 and 0.998. The card of each stud also shows the deflection (Studs), red in seven: M14, M1076, M1056 and four T-joint studs of the 1º Pav, M408, M1100, M1101 and M1113.

16. Column at the joints and box section from the card, and calculate again

The project is corrected with two reinforcements, each in its place. The seven members with a red deflection are at wall joints, and a joint is the place for a column (Columns): in the wall view, LSF card, Column, Back to back (I) in the box and one click on the end stud; at the corners through the left wall, at the T joints through the interior wall that meets the joint. The other six at the top of the list, away from joints (the four jambs, M1002 and the piece of track M377), become box sections through the section card (Studs): select the member, Tornar caixote (to box it), Costas (back to back). Calculate again: green badge, 0 failures in 3,538 checks and no red deflection.

The governing members and the load path

The results card lists each member with its ratio and the combination that governs it, and section 4 of the calculation report sorts them from highest to lowest. At the top, three members above 0.92, all in combined compression and bending: FB52, a 0.60 m piece of chord bracing that the analysis model splits (60 m² house) and that the card lists by its analysis name, and two studs of the left ground floor wall, in the kitchen, which carry both stories and take the wind on that side.

The combination that governs most is CB2, 1.4 on the five gravity cases (PP Parede, PP Telhado, SC Telhado, PP Entrepiso and SC Entrepiso): it decides 733 of the 3,538 checks, including the one for FB52. In the two studs, wind governs: CB10 puts 1.4 on the three dead loads, 0.7 on the two live loads and 1.4 on wind V2+ at 90°; CB22, for M1004, is the same combination with V4+ at 270°.

How the intermediate floor load goes down

A dining room joist shows the path. PS4:4 spans the 3.70 m between the middle interior wall, 3.30 m from the left, and the right wall; in the model it is 55 truss members, and the most stressed one, VT:PS4:4:I0, is at 0.79 in CB6. Each end bears on the ground floor track, over a stud:

joist endground floor stud, below1º Pav stud, above
x = 3.30 m, middle interior wallM1062: 14.54 kN of compression; 0.72 in combined compression and bending (CB24)M333: 0.35, from slenderness (CB7)
x = 7.00 m, right wallM1015: 5.44 kN of compression; 0.90 in combined compression and bending (CB22)M478: 1.35 kN; 0.55 (CB10)

The floor load enters the lower stud; the upper one stays light. On the middle wall, the kitchen and dining room joists land facing each other (step 6), and M1062 takes both: 14.54 kN, almost three times M1015, which only takes the dining room one. The higher ratio, even so, is M1015's: on the exterior wall, the CB22 wind bends the stud.

Sheets of the two-story house

17. Sheet and panel plan, story by story

In the two-story house, each wall line exists once on each story: the ground floor front is Parede 13, as the screen names wall 13, the upper one is Parede 14, and the bottom bar says which story the selected wall is on. The Sheet belongs to the wall; the Panel plan belongs to the story of the selected wall: with Parede 14, you get the 1º Pav plan. To download as PDF or DXF, see LSF sheets.

The wall schedule on the same sheet gives length, openings and panels, all at 2.80 m with a 1.15 mm stud every 600 mm. For the ground floor plan, select a lower wall.

Cut list, takeoff and calculation report

18. Cut list and takeoff

Project cut list, on the same bottom bar, gathers the cut list of the fourteen walls, seven per story, and of the roof: 804 pieces and 2,448.2 kg, panel by panel, on two A3 sheets, with the summary by section at the end (Cut list, takeoff, DXF and IFC). The list covers panels and roof. The Material takeoff card weighs the whole project, intermediate floor included, and reaches 3,073.3 kg: that is the weight of the two-story house.

19. The calculation report

The path is the one in Calculation report: the report button on the results card, Full project, and Download PDF when the calculation report is ready. The parts are chosen on the Prints tab, Reports section, and the title block comes from the project settings.

Calculation report cover: 3,538 members, 3,538 passed, 0 failed

On the cover, per NBR 14762: 3,538 members, 3,538 passed, 0 failed. The analysis model splits some members, which is why it counts more members than the 3,150 of the drawn project. Section 4 of the report sorts the checks by η, with the chord bracing piece and M1003 at the top (0.958 both); section 5 has the member-by-member check, to be reviewed before signing.

The numbers

The two-story house in numbers

The final numbers, all read on the app screens: members and meters on the status bar, under the 3D; the weight on the takeoff; checks, failures and the highest ratio on the results card.

  • 3,150: members in the model
  • 2,090.74 m: of section in the model
  • 3,073 kg: of steel, from the takeoff
  • 24.4 kg/m²: of steel per floor area

The number to compare. The 60 m² house came to 22.8 kg/m²; the two-story house comes to 24.4 kg/m² over the area of both stories. It carries the intermediate floor, walls in 1.15 mm sheet and the reinforcements of step 16, and in return the roof covers only half the floor area. So, to compare two-story houses, divide by the sum of the story areas, not by the footprint.
